Between the years 1986 - 1987, an idea was discussed between Woodspring District Council Entertainment and Sports officials (Brennan Blake and Carol Ridge), the Secretaries and Committees of Worlebury and Weston Golf Clubs, and both Professionals Gary Marks and Terry Murray.
The idea being to devise a method of attracting visitors to Weston and cementing the good relationship between both Worlebury and Weston Golf Clubs. After many months of discussion it was decided to hold a Golf Week with visiting players being able to play both courses on alternate days of a week in early September when the main Summer influx of visitors usually began to tale away.
Local Hotels and Businesses were contacted to gauge their level of interest. Several of these were very keen to implement this idea and sponsorship deals were discussed and agreed. Business entrepreneur Mr. Peter De Savary was one of the first to offer his support. Trophies and sponsorship deals were implemented and the first Golf week commenced at Weston Golf Club in 1988. Some original sponsors are still very supportive such as the Beachlands and Timber-top Hotels and Stephen and Co (Estate Agents).
Other sponsors continue to be replaced, but Weston Golf week has grown from strength to strength and this year 2010 we celebrate the 22nd anniversary of the competition and can boast visitors from as far away as Australia, Miami, Newcastle, Birmingham, London, Cornwall and Devon to name just a few. In this 22nd year it is the turn of Worlebury Golf Club to host the event and both clubs would like to thank all our sponsors both past and present and trust they will continue to give their support to this popular competition.
Entry forms can be found on both Weston and Worlebury websites and the dates are from Monday 6th September to Saturday 11th September 2010.
ENTRIES CLOSE WHEN EVENTS ARE FULL. NO "BALLOT OUT" IN OPERATION - FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS THE TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE'S DECISION IN ALL MATTERS IS FINAL.
