The Captain's welcome
I am delighted to welcome you to Weston super Mare Golf Club. I feel very privileged and honoured to be Captain of this historic club.
The Club was formed in 1892 and more than a century of sustained effort has gone into ensuring that the principles of its famous architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie of Augusta and Pebble Beach fame have been retained. The Course is considered to be one of the best in the South West and is able to provide all year round golf due to the sandy nature of its golf links. The opening holes are adjacent to the beach and both fairways and greens are beautifully maintained. The 15th is a testing 455 yard par 4 and considered by many to be the signature hole on the Course. The Club was the venue for both the Men's and Ladies County Championships last year.
The recently refurbished Clubhouse provides a comprehensive range of facilites including a "spike bar", comfortable Lounge and dining area and snooker room. There is a practice putting green next to the Clubhouse and a practice ground alongside the 17th hole.
We have a full programme of golfing and social events planned for 2008 and I know that members and visitors alike will enjoy the challenge that the Course undoubtedly provides.
The charity which the Lady Captain, Di Brown and I have chosen for 2008 is "Brainwave", which is dedicated to providing support for children with development delay and brain injury in the hope that one day they may achieve some form of independence.
I am very much looking forward to my year as Captain and will do my best to make it an enjoyable year for everyone.
Best WishesJohn Whitewood
Welcome from the Lady Captain
The Ladies weekly competition day is Tuesday and there are many other Club competitions in which the Ladies take part.
We have two teams in the Bristol and District Alliance League and enter teams for County and National knockout competitions. There is also a "Friendly Team" which includes ladies with higher handicaps, competing against other local Clubs during the summer.
Our Clubhouse, which has recently undergone a full refurbishment, is comfortable and inviting. There are various social events including Bridge evenings, throughout the year, both formal and informal events, so there is something for everyone.
On behalf of the Ladies section, we look forward to welcoming you to the Club.
Best Wishes
Di Brown
